Brian, I just wanted to thank you for the $200 from the Rice Bowl Collection. I am from St. Ann Parish in Sebring and I am happy to let you know the "free meal" program we were able to start is doing great! We are "Community Fellowship & Food". Several other churches along with other civic groups have joined forces to provide a hot meal on the first and fourth Monday every month. It was your support through the Rice Bowl Grant that gave us that extra push to continue in our efforts. Not only are we feeding the needy in our community (almost 200 at the first meal) we are also getting to work with some wonderful people from the other churches in our area. God Bless You! And Thanks for your support! Debbie Scott, President of Community Fellowship & Food.

Obama’s plans would create a wedge of distrust between provider and patient. Socialized medicine does this by rendering a doctor more concerned for saving costs for the “system” than he is for patient welfare. And while medicine includes many worthy and caring people, I’ve not known too many doctors that work for free, nor those that will fight the system if it means going broke. Over time, especially the newer ones, will be coopted and corrupted.

Some distrust already exists on financial matters through the Byzantine and insulting medical billing practices. We all think, “Oh crap, how much is this gonna cost me,” even when we’re insured. How much worse, though, will it be when the distrust relates not to bills and paperwork but to your health. The doctor today get paid more when he tries to fix you; if anything, you have to spend some time each visit fending off his overly cautious suggestions that also happen to earn him fees. “OK. OK. Doc, I’ll get it done, next time.”

It will be one more major destructive event in the history of liberalism if the medical profession too is ruined by destroying its essential character of doctor-patient trust by creating financial and legal mandates for doctors to harm their patients.

There has been a great deal of talk in the media — print, radio, tv — just about everywhere about the behavior and tactics being employed by various organizations. There have been comments about well behaved and polite citizenry attending meetings to voice their opinions. There have been stories of those who haven’t conducted themselves well. I suspect these stories will go on throughout the month of August and perhaps beyond. For one, I hope they do go on well beyond.

I think both sides have taken essentially the same tactics. Labeling each other with invectives, giving their supporters a ‘playbook’, and attempting to use the media to their advantage. All of this is okay. It is okay because in America we have the right to freedom of speech, assembly and freedom of the press. These are rights that thousands have given their lives to protect. The debate on health care which consumes nearly a fifth of the national economy and involves everyone is something that we should openly debate and understand the intended and unintended consequences of before we change an entire system.

It is important to provide better access, bend the cost curve so that health care is affordable (and not just through shifting costs by taxing) as well as sustainable, and improving the quality of the care delivered.

We are a country that leads the world in health care innovation. We have to zealously protect that aspect. No other country in the world is positioned to take our place if we take our eye off this important work.

But above all democracy demands that citizens get involved and voice their opinions. To follow the health care debate and other important facts about he health care system visit www.ilovebenefits.wordpress.com

I agree that any such legislation should be "abortion neutral" but doesn't the overall welfare of the nation tend to support the purposes of helping the sick? What is more life-affirming than providing medical care? What is a better example of being a Good Samaritan than helping our neighbors cope with illness?
