In the Gospel reading for ordinary time on Sept 15, we hear St Paul complain to his audience in Corinth that they are “eating” their “communal” meal at different times and even “privately”. This concerns him in that it seems that this practice is causing divisions. He reminds his readers that “Do you not have houses in which you can eat and drink? Or do you show contempt for the Church of God and make those who have nothing feel ashamed?”
Rather, for St Paul and the Christian lifestyle, we are called to celebrate and remember the Lord’s life, death and resurrection in the “breaking of the bread” and the “sharing of the cup.”
I wonder what Paul would say today about the divisions we have in our faith.
I pray today that we as Christians can come together and truly share the bread and cup, literally, but also work towards making ourselves whole, individually and collectively.
